That means if you contact a debt management or credit counseling agency and this agency asks you for some kind of "entry or application fee", hang up the phone immediately. Nine times out of ten, this is a scam. Avoid it like the plague.

Buyer Beware Number 2:
A debt management agency should be professional, and process all payments you send to them to pay down debt immediately. If you receive a call from a creditor saying you are well overdue (2-4 months or more) and you have signed up with a debt management agency over six months ago, the could be trouble. In our day to day business, we have truly seen it all as far as unscrupulous agencies go. But don't panic: talk to your agency, and see if it is possible to get out of your agreement.

When you are looking to get debt management help because your debts have become difficult to handle, it is important to consider location. According to recent statistics, the states with the worst consumer protection laws include Florida, Missisippi and Louisiana. Those with the most consumer-friendly include Massachusetts, California, Connecticut and Oregon. So watch where your debt management firm is located... It could save you a lot of hassle and money in the future.
